Modicon Premium and Quantum discontinued: dates and successors
Modicon Premium and Modicon Quantum keep running in many plants; Schneider Electric has announced the end of commercialization for both families. This article summarises the dates according to Schneider Electric and describes how to plan spare parts and the migration.
The dates according to Schneider Electric
- Modicon Premium: According to Schneider FAQ FA266827 (as of 2023) the Premium PLC family has been discontinued since 2018. The dates differ per part number; they are given on the product page of each number at Schneider Electric.
- Modicon Quantum: According to Schneider Electric notice RAL21AM0001 (version 2.0 of 21 January 2021), selected Quantum I/O and accessories (140…) were to reach the end of their commercial life on 31 December 2021 and all remaining Quantum part numbers were to be removed from active sale on 31 December 2022. Schneider Electric gives the dates per part number (end of commercialisation, end of service) on the product page of each number.
Schneider Electric distinguishes two dates: "discontinued on" is the last date Schneider Electric accepts an offer for the part number; until "end of service" Schneider Electric offers repair and spare parts. The status per part number on the Schneider Electric product page is binding; we retrieved the examples above on 25 October 2026.
Successors: Modicon M580 and M340
On its product pages Schneider Electric names a replacement per part number, for example BMEP582020 (Modicon M580) for TSXP57204M, BMEP582040 for 140CPU65150 and BMEP581020 for 140CPU43412U. For Premium the Schneider document "Migrating Modicon Premium to Modicon M580" (version 2.1 of 4 December 2024) describes paths to Modicon M340 and M580. According to FAQ FA266827 this is a move to a newer PLC family; for converting the program Schneider Electric names the UMAC converter (Unity M580 Application Converter).
What to do now
- Take stock. Which Premium and Quantum part numbers are installed, with version and firmware?
- Check the status per number. The Schneider Electric product page shows the discontinuation date, the end of service and the replacement.
- Define a spare parts reserve. For plants running beyond the end of service, a reserve per critical number.
- Set alerts. Create an obsolescence alert for the affected numbers.
- Plan the migration. With your integrator or your own engineering: new hardware, program conversion, acceptance.
